Vol. 348 No. 11

Written Answers. - Cleaners' Pay.

409.

asked the Minister for the Public Service the conditions and hourly rates of pay of office cleaners used by his Department; and whether such cleaners are directly employed by his Department or by an outside agency.

Most of the office cleaning in my Department and the Civil Service Commission is provided on a contract basis by private contract cleaning firms. The conditions and rates of pay are therefore matters between the individual firms and their staffs. A small number of cleaners are employed directly by my Department and the Civil Service Commission. Such cleaners enjoy the general conditions attaching to unestablished staff in the civil service and are paid at the rate of £106.61 per week.
