Vol. 352 No. 10

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

421.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if a person (details supplied) in County Dublin is entitled to disability benefit, unemployment benefit or social welfare of any other category; and if so, if he will indicate his position.

The person concerned has not claimed disability benefit since September 1981. He would not qualify for payment of disability benefit or unemployment benefit or the award of credited contributions in respect of periods of unemployment or incapacity for work at present as he had no contributions paid or credited in the contribution years 1982-83 and 1983-84.

To requalify for payment of benefit or the award of credited contributions he would need to have 26 contributions paid in respect of insurable employment since the end of the last blank contribution year. If he is unemployed and is capable of, available for, and genuinely seeking work he may qualify for unemployment assistance, which is payable subject to a means test. Application for this should be made at his local employment exchange. If his means are insufficent to meet his needs he may be entitled to supplementary welfare allowance, which is also subject to a means test. In this regard he should contact his local community welfare officer.

422.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when a person (details supplied) in County Cork will be given an oral hearing for disability benefit.

Payment of disability benefit to the person concerned was disallowed from 23 February 1984, following examination by a medical referee who expressed the opinion that he was capable of work. He appealed against the disallowance and was examined on 2 July 1984 by a different medical referee who also considered him to be capable of work. His case has been referred to an appeals officer who proposes to hold an oral hearing. He will be notified of the time and place of the hearing as soon as the arrangements have been made.

423.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when one week's pension which was due to a deceased person (details supplied) will be paid to her daughter.

A payable order in respect of the arrears of old age pension due to the deceased pensioner has been issued to the person concerned.
