Vol. 362 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Protection of Elderly.

36.

asked the Minister for Justice the plans he has and the arrangements he has made to ensure that elderly people and other living in isolated rural areas throughout the country will be protected over the coming winter.

(Limerick East): I am informed by the Garda authorities that there has been a considerable reduction in the number of recorded attacks on the elderly in comparison with last year and they attribute this in substantial part to a combination of community measures and Garda measures. They also say that older people have generally heeded the advice not to keep large sums of money in their houses and presumably knowledge of that fact would come to the notice of those who might be disposed to engage in this kind of criminal activity.

As regards the coming months, I am informed by the Garda authorities that, in conjuction with community alert projects organised by Muintir na Tíre, each divisional officer drew up plans to meet the needs of his own division and steps were taken recently at the approach of the darker evenings to have those plans reviewed and brought up-to-date, as might be necessary. The measures provided for include mobile patrolling of risk areas, spot checks and the allocation of nominated members to duties which would include visiting elderly people living in rural areas.

I thank the Minister. From what he has said I take it that there has been a review recently and that there will be preparation and patrols for the coming winter?

(Limerick East): Yes.

That concludes Question Time. Deputy Hyland has been given permission to put a Private Notice Question. Before he reads his question, I draw his attention to the fact that, since I allowed the question, it has been brought to my attention that an arrest has been made in connection with a van that was found in Dublin and anything in connection with that is sub judice.

I respect the advice of the Chair and I will stay away from that matter.
