Vol. 363 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Cork Schools.

395.

asked the Minister for Education the total cost of the school built in Lyre, Banteer, County Cork; when it was completed; the total cost of the works done in the school subsequently; and if she will explain the justification for these extra costs.

I assume the Deputy's question refers to Lyre national school, Banteer, County Cork. The original school was built in 1950 and an extension thereto was built in 1973. It is my Department's practice to maintain confidentiality with school authorities in relation to the financial details of individual projects. I am satisfied that the school extension which was designed by the school authorities' own consultant was constructed in accordance with accepted building practice at the time, and that grant payments were properly made at the time of construction. My Department has agreed to grant aid necessary remedial works to the roof and windows of the school, and the bulk of the grant payments for which these remedial works were eligible has been paid. I am satisfied that the remedial works also qualified for grant-aid under my Department's scheme of capital grants. Part of the cost of all of the works referred to has been borne by the school authorities.

asked the Minister for Education when the school at Banteer, County Cork, was completed; the total cost of the school; the total cost of the necessary work carried out since; and if she is satisfied that the original building is satisfactory on completion in the light of further information.

I assume that the Deputy's question refers to Banteer national school, County Cork, which was completed in 1976. It is my Department's practice to maintain confidentiality with school authorities in relation to the financial details of individual projects. I am satisfied that the original building which was designed by the school authorities' own consultants was constructed in accordance with accepted building practices at the time, and that grant payments were properly made at the time of construction. My Department has agreed to grant-aid necessary remedial works to the roof of the school, and an interim payment has already been made. I am satisfied that remedial works also qualify for grant-aid under my Department's scheme of capital grants. Part of the cost of all the works referred to has been borne by the school authorities.
