Vol. 364 No. 4

Written Answers. - Lucan (Dublin) By-Pass.

61.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will provide supplementary funds to Dublin County Council to straighten the existing bends on the section of road at St. Edmonsbury, Lucan, which joins the Palmerstown By-pass to Lucan, in view of the number of fatalities that have occurred there.

Dublin County Council's proposals for a by-pass of Lucan have been approved by my Department and the local authority have already commenced preliminary works on the project. Tenders for the main works contract are now being examined by the local authority and, subject to the outcome of that examination, work under the contract is expected to start before the middle of this year. Road grant commitments totalling £4.2 million have been notified to the local authority for the scheme, including £2.38 million in 1986.

The contract works include the realignment of the existing road, immediately to the west of the Palmerstown/Ballydowd dual-carriageway, which will form a slip road to the new dual-carriageway, when completed. The realignment of this section of the existing road is scheduled in the initial phase of the contract and the cost involved will be met from the grants notified for the Lucan By-pass scheme.
