Vol. 365 No. 7

Written Answers. - Monofilament Netting.

72.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry the reason monofilament salmon drift nets can be legally imported and are freely available and subject to VAT, when fishermen are being penalised, and even jailed, for the use of such nets; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Monofilament netting is widely used for sea fishing and may be used legally for fishing for all species of fish other than salmon and trout. The use of monofilament netting for fishing for salmon and trout is banned under by-law as a conservation measure intended to protect salmon and trout stocks. Fines and jail sentences may be imposed for breaches of the by-law.
