Vol. 372 No. 1

Written Answers. - Adult Education.

642.

asked the Minister for Education the amount of funding available for adult education under the vocational education committee scheme in 1986; and the amount which will be made available in 1987.

Total expenditure by vocational education committees on adult education in the financial year 1986 is estimated at £2,663,200 of which pay accounted for £2,109,700 and non-pay for £553,500 approximately. The financial year and the school year are not coterminous. This expenditure, therefore, reflects the allocation of whole-time-teacher-equivalents sanctioned by my Department for adult education classes run by VECs during those portions of the 1985-86 and 1986-87 school years which fell within the 1986 financial year. Comparable figures of expenditure for the financial year 1987 will not be available pending allocation by my Department of whole-time-teacher-equivalents for adult education classes to be run by VECs during the school year 1987-88. The above expenditure is funded from VEC income sources including fees payable by persons attending adult education classes.
