Vol. 372 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Wicklow Schools.

655.

asked the Minister for Education when the new sports hall for the vocational school, Arklow, County Wicklow will go to tender.

The question of the invitation of tenders for the Physical Education Hall at Arklow Vocational School will be reviewed in the context of the capital resources available.

656.

asked the Minister for Education when it is expected that a contract will be signed for the building project at St. Patrick's Loreto primary school, Bray, County Wicklow.

Tenders have been received for the building project at St. Patrick's Loreto national school, Bray, County Wicklow. The tender recommended for acceptance by the school authorities is considered to be excessive for the work involved. A recent meeting took place in my Department with the school authorities and their consultants with a view to achieving suitable reductions and a submission was subsequently made to my Department on the matter. Certain proposals are currently under consideration, and a decision will be communicated to the school authorities at the earliest possible date.

Because of the extent to which my Department's 1987 allocation of capital for the national schools building programme had already been committed prior to my assuming office, I am not in a position at this stage to say when the placing of a contract for the project at St. Patrick's Loreto national school may be authorised and the work begun. I will, however, be keeping under close review the rate of expenditure on national schools under construction, and if the possibility emerges within the current financial year of releasing the project to contract the required authorisation will be given subject of course to compliance with the usual regulations and procedures covering national schools building grants.

657.

asked the Minister for Education when it is expected that a contract will be signed for the major extension to St. Patrick's primary school, Greystones, County Wicklow.

Tenders for the extension to St. Patrick's national school, Greystones, County Wicklow are at present under consideration in my Department. I am not in a position to say at this stage when a contract may be authorised.

658.

asked the Minister for Education the precise position regarding the proposed building plans for Delgany national school, Delgany, County Wicklow.

659.

asked the Minister for Education when the working drawings for the new Church of Ireland primary school in Delgany, County Wicklow will be completed.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 658 and 659 together.

My Department have agreed to grant-aid the provision of a new Church of Ireland school at Delgany, County Wicklow and a grant was formerly sanctioned in January 1987. Working drawings and bills of quantities are in the course of preparation and will be completed at the earliest possible date. It will be necessary to appoint an engineer to prepare structural drawings and this is being attended to.

It is not possible, at this stage, to say precisely when the tender documents will be completed.
