Vol. 372 No. 7

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grant.

253.

asked the Minister for Education the reason a person (details supplied) in County Waterford has been refused payment of a higher education grant; if the application will be investigated; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The person in question has not been refused payment of a higher education grant.

The higher education grants scheme is administered by the local authorities (county councils and county borough corporations). It is understood from Waterford County Council, the local authority administering the scheme in the area of the student concerned, that in the light of distance and local public transport services, this student could reasonably be expected to travel daily between his family residence and the college which he is attending. Hence the lower-adjacent rate of grant in respect of maintenance is the maximum payable in this instance.
