Vol. 373 No. 5

Written Answers. - Appointment of Garda Sergeant.

25.

asked the Minister for Justice when a sergeant will be appointed to Stuake Garda station, Donoughmore, County Cork; and when an extra garda will be provided in Ballingeary Garda station, County Cork.

The allocation of manpower to individual stations is a matter for the Garda authorities in the light of their assessment of needs, overall resources and other demands on Garda services.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are no proposals at present to appoint a sergeant to Stuake station or an extra garda to Ballingeary station but that the strength at both stations will be kept under review. Apart from the Garda service provided from the local stations, both areas are covered by mobile patrols operating from the Garda district headquarters at Macroom and the divisional headquarters at Bandon. Also, when the local station is closed, callers may contact the district headquarters for assistance by means of the external radio-telephone, or "Green Man", which can be used at any time of the day or night. The gardaí at the district headquarters are in radio contact with all foot and mobile patrols operating in the district so that the most appropriate unit can respond to calls for assistance.
