asked the Minister for Defence the total cost to the State for the Army to provide security for the transfer of money by financial institutions for 1985, 1986 and 1987.

Limerick West): Pursuant to their role of rendering aid to the civil power, the Defence Forces give assistance to the Garda Síochána in protecting movements of cash. The estimated additional costs, excluding pay, in respect of the Defence Forces of providing such assistance, for the period 1985 to date, are as follows: 1985, £1,905,000; 1986, £1,570,000; 1987 (20 weeks), £528,000.
