Vol. 376 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cereals Co-Responsibility Levy.

92.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if, in view of the increased demand for Irish malting barley both at home and on the export market, he will ensure that no levies are imposed on Irish barley grown under contract for malting purposes.

93.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if, in view of our island status, he will ensure that this country be exempted from levies on wheat for milling purposes in order to allow Irish growers to supply the full requirements of the Irish market.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 92 and 93 together.

Presumably the Deputy is referring to the co-responsibility levy payable on cereals produced in the Community which are processed or are taken into intervention or are exported to Portugal or to third countries.

The levy is part of the Community support system for cereals and there is no provision in the relevant Regulations whereby Irish growers of milling wheat and malting barley could be exempted from paying it.
