Vol. 376 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meetings with Heads of Government.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he intends to invite the British Prime Minister to Dublin in the immediate future; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

2.

asked the Taoiseach if he has any plans to meet with the head of the Libyan Government.

I propose, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 1 and 2 together.

The answer to Question No. 2 is "No".

As I indicated in a reply to an earlier question on 24 March this year, arrangements for a meeting with the British — or other — Prime Minister would, in accordance with normal practice, be announced simultaneously in the two capitals close to the time of the meeting.

On Question No. 2, because of Colonel Gadaffi's high regard for the Taoiseach since his last visit to Libya and the fear that that regard is unduly influencing the Government's attitude to the breaking-off of diplomatic relations with Libya, I would like to ask the Taoiseach if the will condemn Colonel Gadaffi's professed support for the Provisional IRA.

The Deputy has asked a specific question. I am not prepared to allow an extension of that question. Some of the matters to which she has referred have been dealt with in this House recently by way of parliamentary question.

A Cheann Comhairle, they have not been dealt with by the Taoiseach, and I am raising matters arising out of the last visit to Libya.

The Deputy asked if the Taoiseach has any plans to meet a head of State. She has had a reply to that question.

Then I have raised a matter arising out of the last visit with that head of State.

You had better put down a question on that subject, Deputy.

I did so, a Cheann Comhairle, and it was transferred.

Surely the Taoiseach should avail of the opportunity that is now offered to him to dissociate himself from these constant expressions of support that have been given for the IRA by a head of State.

The Deputy ought to put down a question along those lines.

I dissociate myself from the mischievous attitude of Deputy O'Malley on all these issues.

That is interesting.
