Vol. 379 No. 5

Written Answers. - Redeployment of Civil Servants.

31.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of civil servants who are available for redeployment at present; the Departments in which they are working; the Departments which have been identified as being in need of more staff; and if he will sanction redeployment of such staff immediately.

There is an ongoing process whereby staff, while not redundant in the sense of having no work can be more usefully and cost-effectively redeployed to other work of higher priority. To date, some 420 staff have been redeployed on this basis since March 1987, and the process will continue. Virtually all Departments have had and will continue to have staff redeployed from them in this manner and the main recipients are the office of the Revenue Commissioners and the Department of Social Welfare.
