Vol. 379 No. 6

Written Answers. - Teacher Pre-Service Training.

303.

asked the Minister for Education the changes, if any, which are planned for the pre-service training of teachers who will be teaching Irish at primary or post-primary level; and when these new elements will actually commence in the colleges.

Pending the outcome of the review of the primary school curriculum there are no changes planned in the pre-service training of teachers in the colleges of education with regard to the teaching of Irish.

The review body have been asked to make specific reference to Irish, English and mathematics in analysing the aims and objectives of the primary school curriculum and in identifying how effectively they are being achieved.

The courses of pre-service training of post primary teachers who would be teaching Irish are in general a matter for the authorities of the universities which are autonomous in the matter of the content of such courses.
