Vol. 382 No. 5

Written Answers. - Doonbeg River (Clare) Pollution.

98.

asked the Minister for the Marine if he will make a statement on the pollution of the Doonbeg River, County Clare in which some £6,000 fish were destroyed; the action which is being taken in this matter; and whether there is continuing threat to public health or the environment in the area

Specimens of dead fish and samples of water from the Doonbeg River and effluent samples from local farms are currently being analysed by Clare County Council in conjunction with the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board with a view to establishing the nature of the pollutant. Action to bring the polluter to task is a matter for the local authority i.e., Clare County Council in this instance and the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board. Both these authorities will apply the law as rigorously as possible to ensure that the polluter pays for the damage and is restrained from polluting again.

The question of any threat to public health or the environment is a matter for the local health board and the local authority.
