Vol. 382 No. 6

Written Answers. - Civil Servants on Constituency Work.

15.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the cutbacks in other areas of the public service, it is intended to transfer back to normal duties the civil servants now doing constituency work for Minister and Ministers of State; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am satisfied that the level of staffing in constituency offices of Ministers and Minister of State is the minimum compatible with the effective discharge of their functions as Minister and public representatives. The staffing levels are kept under review but, in the absence of any evidence of overstaffing, there is no proposal to reduce the numbers involved or to reallocate them to any other duties.
