Written Answers. - Customs Seizues of Meat and Live Cattle.

asked the Minister for Finance for each year 1986, 1987, 1988, and the first quarter of 1989 the number of seizures at Border posts of containers of (a) meat and (b) live cattle; the number of revenue fines imposed for each period; the tonnage of meat and live cattle for each period; the value of fines imposed in each period; and the number and identity of the companies involved.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the information sought by the Deputy so far as it is available is set out in the following tables:

Table 1—Details of seizures of containers of meat at Border posts and by mobile patrols in the Land Frontier area.

Table 2—Details of seizures of containers of live cattle at Border posts and by mobile patrols in the Land Frontier area.

The identities of the companies involved are regarded as confidential and therefore cannot be disclosed by the Commissioners.

Notes:

(1) The Revenue Commissioners do not impose fines. However, compromise sums were accepted in lieu of legal proceedings in the cases in question.

(2) Information is not available on the tonnage of meat and cattle seized.

(3) Seizures were from individuals.
