Vol. 393 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Transport Services.

75.

asked the Minister for Education if she will make a statement on the current situation in relation to school transport services.

134.

asked the Minister for Education if she intends to introduce any major changes in the school transport system; if she will outline the way in which funding is to be provided in the present year; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 75 and 134 together.

School transport services will continue to be provided as heretofore and no major changes in the system are contemplated in the immediate future. The operation of the system is, however, under constant review to ensure the maximum economy in its provision.

With regard to funding, it is my intention to seek the approval of a supplementary estimate in order to provide additional moneys which it is estimated will be required in the current financial year to meet the cost to CIE of providing school transport services in 1989. I will in due time be making a formal statement to the House in that connection.
