Vol. 394 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Transport Scheme.

133.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that school children from the Doon and Endrim areas of County Offaly attending schools at Ferbane are collected under the school transport scheme at 8.10 a.m. each morning and are not collected each evening until 5 p.m., that is, one and a half hours after school ends; and, in view of the unsatisfactory operation of school transport in that area, if she will consider an immediate review.

The service for the pupils of the Doon and Endrim areas of County Offaly provides morning pick-up times of 8.35 a.m. and 8.49 a.m., respectively, for classes which start at 9.15 a.m. and an evening pick-up time at 5 p.m. for classes finishing at 4 p.m. This is considered to be satisfactory in the general context of the operation of my Department's school transport scheme. A review is, however, being carried out in order to establish whether it may be possible to improve the service without adding to costs.
