Vol. 398 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Chief State Solicitor's Office.

John Bruton

Question:

18 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Taoiseach if the review of the staffing needs of the Chief State Solicitor's Office referred to by him in reply to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 2 and 3 of 14 November 1989 is complete; and if there has been any reduction in the delays in producing books of evidence since that date.

The recruitment of 15 additional solicitors and 13 extra law clerks to improve the staffing position in the Office of the Chief State Solicitor has been approved. Of these, six solicitors and three law clerks have taken up duty and the recruitment of the remainder is in hands.

Since the assignment of the additional staff, there has been a progressive and substantial reduction in delays in the production of books of evidence. Most books of evidence are now being prepared within the normal time limits regarded by the courts as appropriate for that purpose.

I welcome that.
