Vol. 404 No. 4

Written Answers. - Howth Harbour Development.

Patrick McCartan

Question:

156 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for the Marine the current position regarding the provision of an auction hall at Howth pier, County Dublin; whether he still supports the proposal; if he will outline his proposals for the development of the fishing industry at Howth; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I refer to the reply delivered to a similar parliamentary question on 18 December last when I stated that provision of a new auction hall in Howth is included in my Department's fishery harbour development programme 1989-1993. This is still the position and design work on the new building is proceeding.

Future development of the fishing industry at Howth will be aimed at increasing the supply of fish generally through a higher take-up of fish quotas and securing higher added value through improvements in quality and additional processing of the catch.
