Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Wind Generating Stations.

Enda Kenny

Question:

66 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Energy if he will make a statement on the provision of a wind generating station at Bellacorick, County Mayo; the number of jobs to be provided there; the estimated electricity to be produced there; and if he has any proposals for other wind generating stations in the future.

As the Deputy is aware. I announced in April 1991 that a proposal from Renewable Energy Ireland Ltd to construct a wind farm at Bellacorick, County Mayo had been selected subject to the conclusion of satisfactory contract arrangements by 31 October this year. Work has been proceeding since between the various parties concerned with a view to conclusion of agreements and contracts in relation to payment of EC grant, construction of civil works, supply and erection of turbines, transmission and purchase of electricity and associated matters such as financial insurance and bonding. The company have recently informed me of certain changes in the project arrangements that they are proposing which they claim would enhance the viability of the project. I am having these matters examined with a view to satisfying myself that these are acceptable.

Construction of the wind farm would provide about 35 temporary jobs. Operation and maintenance would give continuous employment to two people. It is estimated that electricity production would be in the region of 18 gigawatt hours per annum, depending on actual windspeeds, of course. This is the only wind farm project being considered by my Department at present.
