Vol. 414 No. 4

Written Answers. - Howth Fish Auction Hall.

Patrick McCartan

Question:

23 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for the Marine the present position with regard to EC funding and support for the construction of a fish auction hall at Howth, Dublin 13; when work will commence on the construction; the estimated period for the construction; the way the hall will be administered and managed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Application has been made for Community financial assistance towards the provision of an auction hall at Howth under the port facilities programme provided for by Council Regulation (EC) 4028/86; decisions on such applications are a matter for the Commission of the European Communities. A decision on this application has not yet been forthcoming. Subject to eligibility under the abovementioned regulation, I have included this project in my Department's Fishery Harbour Development Programme 1989-1993. Subject to available finance construction will take about one year.

As I stated in reply to a question on 5 June last, management of the auction hall, in line with normal practice will be a matter for my Department. There will, of course, be local consultation prior to the adoption of any management plan.
