Vol. 414 No. 9

Written Answers. - Educational System Training.

Peter Barry

Question:

41 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has satisfied himself that the level and quality of training in the educational system meets the current and future need of Irish industry; his views on whether adequate funding is being provided to this area; if he intends having discussions with industry and the educational institutions with regard to changes; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The level and quality of training in the educational system is of course, primarily a matter for the Minister for Education. I certainly convey my views to the Minister on the needs of industry in this area and it is an issue on which I have frequent discussion with industrialists all over the country. Both of us agree, along with all our colleagues in Government, that the level and quality of training for our workforce must be raised to the best standards that obtain in Europe. This is an area where I expect the industrial policy review group to have substantive recommendations in their report which I expect will be published early in 1992.
