Vol. 415 No. 2

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Relations with South Africa.

Tom Kitt

Question:

36 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the EC intends to wait for the establishment of a broadly supported interim government-transitional authority in South Africa before considering upgrading its representation in South Africa to full diplomatic status.

The Commission of the European Communities opened a technical office in Pretoria early in 1991. The office was established to oversee the implementation of the Community's Special Programme of Assistance to the Victims of Apartheid (Positive Measures Programme).

It is envisaged that the Commission will open a full delegation office in South Africa some time in the future but, to my knowledge, no decision has so far been taken in this regard.
