Vol. 419 No. 5

Written Answers. - Community Garda Transport.

Mervyn Taylor

Question:

119 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the representations from a residents association in Dublin 6 for the provision of transport for the local community Garda (details supplied); and if, in view of the fact that the provision of transport for the community Garda in this large area would be most important to assist him with his duties, he will agree to examine the possibility of providing such a vehicle for him; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of representations from a residents association in Dublin 6 for the provision of transport for the local community Garda.

The allocation of resources is a matter for the Garda Commissioner and accordingly I have referred the representations which I have received to him for consideration. I should point out however that the system of community policing was established to promote good relations and to facilitate personal contact between members of the Force and the community. For these reasons the provision of motor transport to the community Garda may not always be in the best interests of the residents of the area concerned from a policing point of view. The final decision in the matter will rest with the Garda Commissioner.
