Question:75 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice when the next competition for the recruitment of gardaí will be held; and the number of gardaí likely to be recruited.

The recruitment of Garda trainees from the current recruitment competition was scheduled to continue until December 1995. However, in accordance with the proposals in the Programme for Government, I will be looking at ways of accelerating the intake from the current competition. In any event, the question of making arrangements for a new recruitment competition does not arise at present.
