Vol. 425 No. 8

Written Answers. - Car Parking Facilities.

Liz McManus

Question:

76 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice if she will institute a scheme to enable people looking after the elderly and disabled to park in no-parking areas in order to facilitate their work.

It is a matter for the Garda Commissioner, having consulted with the relevant local authority and obtained the consent of the Minister for the Environment, to make by-laws for the control and regulation of the parking of vehicles on public roads. For instance, under existing by-laws disabled persons holding local authority permits are exempt from certain parking regulations. I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are no plans under consideration at present to extend this exemption to the persons referred to in the Deputy's question. However, the matter will be kept under review.
