Vol. 426 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dumping of Fire Damaged Meat.

Alan M. Dukes

Question:

44 Mr. Dukes asked the Minister for the Environment if it is envisaged that funding will be provided from the EC cohesion fund for the preparation of a comprehensive environmental impact statement on the dumping of fire-damaged meat at Cregga, County Roscommon; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Wexford): Environmental impact assessment is a pre-development procedure which did not statutorily arise in this case. The requirement at this stage in relation to the Cregga site is for rigorous and systematic environmental monitoring to permit an accurate assessment of ongoing environmental effects and of the need for remedial action, if appropriate.

Extensive monitoring of the site is being carried out by Roscommon County Council, which is the responsible environmental authority. This monitoring will continue for as long as necessary. I do not envisage that funding from the EC Cohesion Fund could be applied for this purpose.
