Vol. 428 No. 5

Written Answers. - Prisoner Petitions.

Martin Cullen

Question:

33 Mr. Cullen asked the Minister for Justice the number of petitions to commute or reduce sentences that were opened in each of the past two years; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Statistics relating to petitions are not maintained in such a way as to enable the information sought in the question to be provided and compilation of the information, which is not readily available, would require the commitment of a disproportionate amount of staff time. I can, however, inform the Deputy that four petitions in 1991 and three in 1992 resulted in the substitution of fines in lieu of custodial sentences.
