Vol. 428 No. 5

Written Answers. - Bank Security.

Martin Cullen

Question:

54 Mr. Cullen asked the Minister for Justice the cost at present to the Exchequer of providing Garda security to banks and other financial institutions; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply to Question No. 41 on 4 February, 1992. Official Report, Volume 415, columns 808 and 809.

A contribution of £2 million was made by the associated banks to the Exchequer in 1992 towards the costs of security services, such as cash escorts, provided to the banks by the Garda Síochána and the Defence Forces. The Minister for Finance announced in his recent Budget Statement that he would be seeking a similar contribution from the banks in the current year and that he was making a provision of £2 million in 1993 for this purpose.
