Dáil Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 26 May 1993

Vol. 431 No. 4

Business of Dáil.

I do not know whether it would be in order at this point but, as we finished the Broadcasting Authority (Amendment) Bill, 1993, early and it is unlikely that the spokespersons on the Unfair Dismissals (Amendment) Bill, 1993 will be available, may I suggest that the House adjourn now since we would be breaking at 1.30 p.m. in any event?

Acting Chairman

I understand that the Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise and Employment, Deputy O'Rourke, is standing by. We shall give her a little time to join us.

I am not sure whether the spokespersons for the Opposition parties are standing by.

Acting Chairman

We come then to item No. 1 — Unfair Dismissals (Amendment) Bill, 1993, Second Stage.

As Members will be aware, this Bill was not due to be taken until 5 o'clock this afternoon. I am delighted, of course, at the speed with which the Broadcasting Authority (Amendment) Bill, 1993, has been dealt with. However, I must apologise for not having copies of my script, they are being prepared for Members of the House but they may not be available before 1.30 p.m.

Acting Chairman

Is it agreeable that the script of the Minister of State will be made available later?

What are the time arrangements for this debate?

Acting Chairman

The speech of the Minister or Minister of State, and spokespersons for the Fine Gael Party, the Progressive Democrats and the Technical Group shall not exceed 30 minutes and the speech of each other Member shall not exceed 20 minutes.

It is, I think, within the powers of this body to agree to adjourn at this point. Most Members will have been caught offside by the efficiency with which we dealt with the Broadcasting Authority (Amendment) Bill, 1993.

I do not know whether that is in order.

I think it would be in order.

Acting Chairman

Will the Minister propose it?

I propose that we adjourn now until 2.30 p.m. This would mean that Members would have copies of my script available to them and it would not be necessary to have an artificial break in the middle of my speech.

Sitting suspended at 1.20 p.m. and resumed at 2.30 p.m.
