Vol. 432 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Cork Employment Exchange Building.

Peter Barry

Question:

14 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Finance the reason it has taken over two years to advertise for public sale the old employment exchange building, Union Quay, Cork; if there was any specific reason that the Office of Public Works waited so long to advertise the sale; and if he will make a statement on the matter particularly in view of the fact that, in the interim, the building became dilapidated which might consequently affect its purchase price.

The former employment exchange at George's Quay-White Street, Cork, was sold on the basis of tender documentation prepared for the Commisioners of Public Works by the Chief State Solicitor. Resolution of matters concerning title to the property delayed completion of the documentation until end January 1993. Tenders, invited by the Commissioners in April 1993, were received on 14 May 1993 and a tender was accepted on 18 May. The satisfactory level of the successful tender did not reflect any deterioration in the condition of the premises.

Was the only reason for the delay in offering the building for sale that the title was not cleared?

That is correct. There was a problem with the title which had to be cleared through the Chief State Solicitor's Office.
