Dáil Éireann debate -
Thursday, 24 Feb 1994

Vol. 439 No. 4

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of related notices under Standing Order 30 from Deputies Owen and Harney. I propose to call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

I seek your permission under Standing Order 30 to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to debate the statements in Dáil Éireann by the Minister of State, Deputy Eithne Fitzgerald, on 23 November 1993, columns 9-12 of the Official Report, which contained inconsistencies and inaccuracies on the information from the EU Commission last November on approval for projects in the national plan, with particular reference to Tallaght Hospital and whether it will be included in the national plan.

I hereby request leave under Standing Order 30 to move the Adjournment of the Dáil for the purpose of discussing a specific and important matter of public interest, namely, the allocation of European Union Structural Funds to Ireland in view of a report today that the Government is to submit to Brussels next week a revised national plan, in light of the persistent indications that the European Union Commission is unhappy with a number of the plan's proposals and the manner in which the Government has pursued these vital negotiations, bearing in mind in particular the remarks of the Minister for Enterprise and Employment.

Having fully considered the matters, I do not consider them to be contemplated by Standing Order 30 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

The Opposition is silenced again.

Which Opposition?

The Minister should mind his own business. He should look after his job and we will look after ours.

(Interruptions.)

On a point of order, I do not wish to challenge your ruling because you are in order, but——

You may not challenge my ruling.

I wish to make a point of order.

It is not a point of order, Deputy. You may not challenge my ruling in this manner.

I am not challenging your ruling. The Government is to submit a new plan to Brussels by 3 March and this is the only opportunity we have to discuss that matter.

Sorry to disappoint the Deputy, but there will be no new plan. The Deputy is wrong, as usual.
