Vol. 441 No. 8

Written Answers. - Dublin Garda Patrol.

Tony Gregory

Question:

68 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if the Garda will be requested to patrol the Royal Canal between Cross Guns Bridge and Binn's Bridge, Dublin 7, so that local residents can enjoy this amenity.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the area of the Royal Canal between Cross Gun's Bridge and Binn's Bridge is policed by the gardaí from Mountjoy station. The area is patrolled on a 24-hour basis particularly by foot as well as by mobile patrols, including the community garda with responsibility for this area. The Garda authorities are aware that problems can occur in the vicinity of the canal from time to time in relation to youths drinking cider. However, they report that the local gardaí closely monitor the situation and ensure that these problems are dealt with effectively. The Deputy will be aware that additional new powers have been provided under the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994 for the Garda to deal with situations of this nature, including the power of confiscation if alcohol is involved.

The Garda authorities are satisfied that this area of the Royal Canal is receiving adequate policing and have assured me that this situation will continue.
