Vol. 442 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Written Answers. - Attacks on the Elderly.

Ivor Callely

Question:

10 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if it has been brought to her attention the fear of some elderly, particularly elderly living alone, of violent attack or break in to their home; the proposals, if any, she has to address this matter; plans, if any, she has to provide or subsidise the provision of an alarm/alert home system; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am, of course, greatly concerned about criminal attacks on members of the public, but in particular those aimed at vulnerable groups in our society, such as the elderly living alone who are unfortunately considered to be easy prey by many of those involved in criminal activity. The Garda authorities are aware of the seriousness of this type of crime and are committed to the detection and apprehension of those responsible.
