Vol. 443 No. 1

Written Answers. - DMA Crime.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

66 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, in respect of the latest year for which figures are available, the total percentage of reported crime which occurred in the Dublin Metropolitan Area; the total number of gardaí assigned to the Dublin Metropolitan area other than those assigned to national squads and duties; and the percentage of the total number of gardaí who are located in Dublin.

Information in relation to recorded indictable crime nationally and in the Dublin Metropolitan Area is contained in the Garda Commissioner's Annual Report on Crime, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. The 1993 report will be published shortly.

There are a total of 3,990 gardaí assigned to the Dublin Metropolitan Area at present. This figure includes those members attached to the five Garda Divisions in the DMA and DMA Headquarters at Harcourt Square. Some of the gardaí at DMA Headquarters would have responsibilities both inside and outside the DMA. This figure does not include members assigned to Garda Headquarters at the Phoenix Park who are mainly involved in national duties. The percentage of the total number of gardaí who are located in Dublin, including those at DMA Headquarters is 37 per cent.
