Vol. 443 No. 3

Written Answers. - Howth (Dublin) Garda Strength.

Seán Kenny

Question:

123 Mr. S. Kenny asked the Minister for Justice if additional Garda resources can be provided for Howth Garda Station, County Dublin, at weekends to deal with the late night disturbances in Howth village which arise afer the closing of the late night discos.

The Garda authorities are aware of the possibility of disturbances, due to late night discos which close at 2 a.m., in Howth village on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and have taken a number of measures in order to deal with the problem. The present Garda strength at Howth is 37 and since 20 May 1994 the District Officer has assigned 2 additional gardaí, from within his district, to Howth each weekend to patrol the village and surrounding area from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. in the morning.

The Garda authorities are satisfied that this arrangement is adequate to combat possible weekend disturbances in the area. However, they will keep the policing needs of the Howth area under continuing review and any changes considered necessary will be made.
