Vol. 443 No. 8

Written Answers. - Extradition Requests.

John Connor

Question:

26 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the fact that a number of well known persons against whom serious charges for extraditable offences exist in this country have absconded to Spain; and the action, if any, her Department or the Garda have taken to have these people extradited back to Ireland to face the charges laid.

As I indicated in reply to Question No. 66 on 25 November, 1993 a decision on whether to proceed with the making of an extradition request to secure the return of a person from abroad to stand trial here is a matter for the Director of Public Prosecutions. The Director is independent in the exercise of his functions.
