Dáil Éireann debate -
Friday, 1 Jul 1994

Vol. 444 No. 8

Order of Business (Resumed).

In view of the fact the Taoiseach has made much of the fact that the Dáil will be meeting in the recess through its committees and that this is a way of dealing with the problems of TEAM Aer Lingus and Irish Steel in regard to the responsibilities of this House——

I did not say that.

Is the Taoiseach trying to say that the House has no responsibilities in these matters?

I did not say that.

Of course it has. Does the Taoiseach agree that the Ministers concerned will report on a weekly basis to the Joint Committee on Commercial State-sponsored Bodies on the position as it evolves in these two State-owned entities?

Why, after all the Government spent on preparing for the Tribunal of Inquiry into the Beef Processing Industry, and its anticipation about the contents of that report——

Brief comments only, please.

——can it not decide whether the Dáil should be recalled to debate the contents of that report?

I have already said that decision will be taken by the Government in its own time.

(Interruptions.)

Order, I cannot allow a debate now.

I will not be dictated to by Deputy John Bruton.

On what basis will the Government take such a decision?

(Interruptions.)

Order, I cannot allow a debate now.

Will this decision be the political convenience of the Labour Party and Fianna Fáil, or will it be in the interests of this House?

Deputy Bruton, please desist. I must ask that we now hear Deputy Harney.

This House set up the Tribunal of Inquiry into the Beef Processing Industry and it is not a matter simply for the Government to decide when it will allow the contents of that report to be discussed here, it is a matter for the Dáil. The Taoiseach referred to the fact that he had indicated he was willing to have it discussed here. I understand that the Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach, Deputy Dempsey, briefed political correspondents the other evening, to the effect that the Government had agreed to recall——

(Interruptions.)

Brief questions, Deputy.

It appeared in newspapers and I have not seen a correction.

(Interruptions.)

This was reported in The Irish Times yesterday. The Minister of State can correct me if I am wrong.

The Deputy is not correct, so she should not base her argument on a false premise.

As I understand it, the Minister of State told political correspondents that the Government had agreed to recall the Dáil in July when the report became available but that, if it did not appear——

A brief reference is all I can entertain at this point.

I understand the Minister of State informed the media that the Government had agreed to recall the Dáil in July if the report became available but that if it was not available until August, they would not recall it because the Taoiseach would be in New Zealand or Australia. We need an assurance from the Taoiseach that this House will be recalled to discuss the report of the Tribunal of Inquiry into the Beef Processing Industry.

Hear, hear.

We want that assurance.

(Interruptions.)

So much for transparency and openness; what are they afraid of?

(Interruptions.)

That is the way it should be discussed.

I must move on to put the question.

Do not rush the Deputy, it is our last day.

In more ways than one.

(Interruptions.)

The Taoiseach implied that the parties on this side of the House were anxious to see the companies referred to, TEAM Aer Lingus and Irish Steel, closed.

That is not what he said.

Any reading of the record will demonstrate that is not true.

I am sorry to interrupt the Deputy but I must now put the following question: "That the Dáil on its rising today shall adjourn until 11 October, 1994".
