Question:

117 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for the Marine when his Department became aware that the proposed Loran C Radio Navigational Mast near Loop Head, County Clare, would be of benefit nationally and internationally in the control of illegal importation of drugs. [4068/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 52, 55, 106, 107, 108 and 117 together.

I refer Deputies to the written reply which I gave on 26 January 1995 to a question on plans to construct a mast on the Loop Head peninsula as part of the Loran C navigation system.

As explained in that reply, the proposal to construct a mast is the subject of a judicial review of An Bord Pleanála's decision.

I am not aware of any new evidence regarding the safety of the proposed Loran C mast.

As regards the role which Loran C, decca and satellite-based communications systems might play in the monitoring of suspect vessels this is a matter primarily for the drug enforcement authorities.
