Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Louth Coastal Rescue Service.

Seamus Kirk

Question:

677 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for the Marine if he will consider establishing a coastal rescue service for Carlingford Lough with a base in Greenore, County Louth; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16431/96]

The Department of the Marine's marine emergency service division (IMES) has a coastal unit based at Greenore, County Louth. I am aware that a local group aims to establish an inshore rescue service. Information on establishing such a local rescue service may be obtained from the water safety section of the National Safety Council.

I suggest that this service once established should apply for membership of the Community Inshore Rescue Service which is under the aegis of my Department. Information on membership requirements is available from IMES.

Lifeboat coverage of Carlingford Lough is at present provided by the RNLI lifeboats stationed at Kilkeel, County Down and Clogherhead, County Louth.
