Question:

28 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total number of appeals against decisions which his Department received in 1996; and the total number of applications allowed and disallowed. [9938/97]

During 1996, 12,183 appeals against decisions made by deciding officers of my Department were received in the independent Social Welfare Appeals office. In that year, 11,613 appeals were disposed of. Of these, 5,834 or 50.2 per cent were resolved in favour of appellants, 4,444 or 38.3 per cent were disallowed and 1,335 or 11.5 per cent were withdrawn by appellants.
