Vol. 492 No. 1

Written Answers. - Political Party Staff.

John Gormley

Question:

114 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Finance the number of staff assigned to each of the political parties in Dáil Éireann under the scheme of secretarial assistance for non-office holding Members and the grades involved in each case. [13683/98]

Members of Dáil and Seanad Éireann and political parties represented in both Houses employ staff under a scheme of secretarial assistance for non-office holding Members who are paid from the vote of the Office of the Houses of the Oireachtas. Under the scheme, staff are provided on the basis of one assistant per Deputy and one assistant for every three Senators. There are, in addition, a number of staff provided to multi-member parties in the Houses to carry out work related to their parliamentary activities. The current allocation of staff paid from the Vote for the Office of the Houses of the Oireachtas under the scheme is set out as follows. Where one job is carried out by two people on a job-sharing basis, this is counted as one post.
