Vol. 495 No. 1

Written Answers. - Television Reception.

Michael Ring

Question:

350 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will liaise with RTE to find the reason the signal for RTE and Network 2 is so poor in the Westport area of County Mayo; and when it will be rectified. [19227/98]

This is a matter for RTE.

RTE informs me that viewers receiving RTE 1 and Network 2 from the Westport transmitter normally receive good quality television reception. However, RTE is currently carrying out major engineering works on its network in the west. Unfortunately, this led to some technical problems which resulted in poor quality output from the Castlebar transmitter. As the Westport transmitter receives its input from Castlebar, any impairment on the Castlebar transmitter results in Westport viewers experiencing the same difficulties. All television dealers in the area affected were alerted to this defect by RTE. According to RTE, the problems that existed have been cleared and viewers in Westport should now have good quality television reception.
