Vol. 496 No. 7

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

288 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Education and Science when he will set up a unit in the autistic spectrum for Monaghan in view of the fact that this was promised some time ago; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23995/98]

My Department does not have an application for the establishment of a special class for children with autism in the Monaghan area. The Deputy will be aware of my recent announcement concerning the establishment of special classes for children with autism. In the current school year, a number of special classes catering specifically for children with autism, have been established in both primary schools and special schools. To date a total of 14 such classes have been set up in primary schools and seven classes in special schools. Each class, which caters for a maximum of six children, receives the support of a class teacher, a child care assistant and enhanced capitation funding. In addition, an out-reach support service is provided by the relevant health authority. Special classes are established on the basis of an assessed level of need. If the Deputy would like to provide information concerning children with autism in the Monaghan area requiring a special class service, my Department will investigate such provision.
