Question:

153 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will provide funding to St. Colman's hospital, Rathdrum, County Wicklow, for the provision of a special unit for Alzheimer's patients; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23825/98]

The provision of services at St, Colman's Hospital, Rathdrum is the responsibility of the Eastern Health Board. I understand that the board provides a range of services for older people including assessment, rehabilitation, respite-intermittent care, welfare, day care and residential care, While not having a dedicated unit for patients with dementia, the hospital cares for such persons, including those with Alzheimer's disease, within the existing units.

The Eastern Health board in conjunction with the local community is currently considering the hospital's priority needs which include, inter alia, the creation of an enhanced environment for Alzheimer-dementia patients by the provision of additional day space which will improve the quality of life of the residents. I can assure the Deputy that any proposals received from the Eastern Health Board in this regard will be given the fullest consideration in my Department.
