Vol. 519 No. 2

Written Answers. - National Minimum Wage.

Willie Penrose

Question:

86 Mr. Penrose asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the minimum remuneration, under the National Minimum Wage Act, 2000, payable to a person who is 19 years of age and doing carpenter's work, although not qualified as a carpenter nor undergoing an apprenticeship; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13464/00]

If the employee referred to by the Deputy is in the first year of employment after the date he or she commenced employment over age 18, he or she is entitled under the National Minimum Wage Act, 2000, to £3.52 per working hour in a pay reference period. If the employee is in the second year of employment after the date he or she commenced employment over age 18, he or she is entitled to £3.96 per working hour in a pay reference period.

However, if the employee's employment is covered by the registered employment agreement for the construction industry, then the employee would be entitled to the applicable rate of pay under that agreement.
