Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - Youth Recreation Funding.

Liam Aylward

Question:

514 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the progress on an application for funding by Carlow Regional Youth Service to develop a central youth facility in Carlow. [7835/02]

The position is that an allocation of €190,000 was made to Carlow in late 1999 under the Young people's facilities and services fund – YPFSF. In late 2000, the development group for the YPFSF in Carlow, which includes representation for the Carlow Regional Youth Services, made a submission to the national assessment committee, NAC, of the fund for the development of a central youth facility for the town and for advice on how best to progress the project. They were informed at that time that no additional funding would be available under the YPFSF at that time, outside of their original allocation. I subsequently met with representatives from Carlow Regional Youth Service in early 2001 to discuss their proposal.

The Deputy should note that the development group made a further submission to the NAC in April 2001 seeking permission to use some of the funding allocated to them to develop the necessary plans to secure planning permission for their proposed youth facility. Following a meeting between representatives of the development group and the NAC in May 2001, this proposal was approved and the decision was communicated to the Carlow development group. I have had no further submission from the development group.
